Updates February 2026

New server, new vocabulary resource (the ASWL), and a reminder about the academic writing course. Details below.

Website upgrade

I've recently upgraded the website server, which should mean faster loading and better stability in the long run. Unfortunately, the move has brought a few headaches, including some downtime and intermittent page errors. I've been debugging and everything seems to be back to normal, but if you come across any content that doesn't look right, please drop me a line so I can fix it. Big thanks to those who have already been in touch!

Academic Spoken Word List

aswl I'm pleased to share a resource you may find useful: the Academic Spoken Word List (ASWL).

Most visitors to the site know the Academic Word List (AWL), which is helpful for written English. But what about spoken English? The ASWL, developed by Dang, Coxhead and Webb, captures the vocabulary that appears most frequently in university lectures, seminars, labs, and tutorials. If you are working on academic listening or speaking skills, this list is definitely worth a look.

Coming soon: ASWL highlighter! More in a future newsletter.

Reminder: Mastering Academic Writing

patreon

A quick reminder for those aiming to strengthen their academic writing: my online course, Mastering Academic Writing, is open for enrolment.

The course takes you from the fundamentals through to advanced skills like critical writing and presenting balanced arguments. It's self-paced, with a mix of video lectures, infographics, and practical exercises using authentic academic texts, designed to help you write more clearly and confidently.
