It is most useful at the higher end (i.e. less frequent words). Many of these words are perfectly fine in academic writing, but are often overlooked by students who go straight to the AWL (Academic Word list). The GSL is often a better a place to start for many students. This tool was developed alongside the GSL highlighter.
